Spanish Christmas Lottery - £2 billion in prize payments

Experience the excitement of one of the highest paying lottery games worldwide! The Spanish Christmas Lottery takes place every year just before Christmas, this year it falls on the 22nd of December 2011.

More akin to a raffle than a lottery, each ticket is represented by a number. There are 99,000 of these tickets in one series, and there are 195 separate series in total.

Because the ticket numbers in each series are the same, all 195 ticket holders with the matching number will win the prize called out.

About the Spanish Christmas Lottery

One of the oldest lotteries in the world, the game has taken place every year since 1812. Going by the total prize money, it is the largest lottery in the world. An incredible 70% of ticket sales are re-distributed in prizes - higher than other lotteries such as EuroMillions or UK Lotto.

One full ticket would normally costs € 300, therefore the Spanish Christmas Lottery is sold in a 1/10ths to bring the price down to a more palatable € 30. This splits the prize won automatically between the 10 ticket holders. Each 1/10th of a ticket is called a Decimo.

Lottery24 does not yet offer scanned tickets for the Spanish Christmas Lottery. Before the draw we will email you your ticket number, and of course notify you in the event of a win.

Prize Structure for the Spanish Christmas Lottery

Drawing the winning tickets

Unique to this lottery is the way in which the numbers are drawn and the ceremony surrounding this event. Each year children from local schools are chosen to read out or sing the numbers chosen by the lottery machine.

The child on the left with the smaller golden ball, chooses the ticket number and the one on the right with the large golden ball determines the prize.

As you can see there are an awful lot of prizes in the large golden ball that need to be drawn! The draw is broadcasted live on Spanish TV, watched by millions of people. The actual draw takes several hours.

The children and the way they call out the winning numbers has made the lottery famous around the world - and of course the many prizes up for grabs (more than 348,000 prizes!).
