It is thought that the reason for the increase in lotto ticket sales is due to the wealthy city bankers buying euromillions tickets in the hope of winning the lottery jackpot. The recent euro millions jackpot hit an estimated £80m. Once the lottery jackpot reached this peak the lottery ticket sales really began to increase.

Colin and Chris Weir picked up the lottery jackpot this year when they were the lottery winners of the biggest lottery jackpot to date, winning £161m. Camelot, who is the team behind the national lottery, said that since then the increase in lottery tickets, online lotto tickets and euromillions tickets, has come from some of the wealthiest areas of London such as Kensington and Chelsea. A Camelot spokesperson has said, “We have a core base of regular euromillions players but when the jackpots on offer become huge, typically over the £80 million mark, we also see lots of new and occasional players taking part.”

Many of these high increase areas have been in places such as Canary Wharf where there is a large amount of city bankers and high earners.

The Camelot spokesperson went on to add that, “We presume that people working in these areas only think it is worth playing when the prize has got into the stratospheric levels.”

Occasional lottery players only seem to purchase lottery tickets when the lottery jackpot is at a significant high. With the lottery results and euromillions results happening weekly, with a high chance of there being a rollover, more lottery tickets are purchased.

Many people have speculated that due to the current UK economy people are turning their hopes to winning the lottery jackpot, whether that be through the euro millions or national lottery. However, other lotteries in economically troubled areas such as the Spanish ElGordo, German Lotto and the Italia SuperEnalotto have not seen such lottery ticket rises as the UK lottery and euromillion lottery has.
