It is no secret that the National Lottery does more than a few good turns each year. A percentage
of the sales of the National Lottery tickets, euro million tickets and online lotto tickets go towards
money for good causes. Due to the increased sales reported by Camelot, the company behind
the National Lottery and euromillions, a record amount was raised in the six months leading to
September.
A total of £918.3m has been raised so far this year. That is a staggering difference from the
£784.8m that was raised in the same period of last year. The lottery jackpot isn't the only thing
that you could benefit from by purchasing your lotto ticket. To date the National Lottery has funded
over 370,000 different awards and projects. This means that there has been a total of £27bn given
to good causes by the National Lottery from the sales of lotto tickets nationwide.
The plan is that by the spring of next year Camelot will see around 28% of its revenue from
National Lottery and euromillions sales going to good causes. It makes you wonder what we
would do without it. The lottery results are not just the numbers you see on the screen whilst
waiting to see if you have won the lottery jackpot. The lottery results are also the things that you
probably didn't even notice were going on where you live. It could be new facilities for your local
school, new equipment for a children's play area or even National Lottery funding for a beloved
heritage site.
The chief executive of Camelot, Dianne Thompson, has said, “We've made an extremely positive
start to the 2011/2012 financial year, raising a record amount for the good causes and paying out
record sums in prize money to our players, which is what the National Lottery is all about. But
this success isn't an overnight phenomenon. It's the result of our proven strategy for responsible
growth that has seen our sales rise steadily and our player numbers increase over the long term by
encouraging many people to play but to spend relatively small amounts.”
As you can see the National Lottery has a clear strategy as to how to get lotto players to keep up
their ticket sales. Of course there is the huge incentive. Winning the lottery jackpot of course but,
it is important to recognise that the National Lottery and euromillions is not simply about the instant
lottery results on a Saturday night. It is about playing and being part of a wider community, one that
is constantly giving back.
