The Big Lottery Fund – What’s Your View?

2012-07-04

On Saturday the 5th of November 2011, the National Lottery Awards were held at a star-studded ceremony in London to showcase the incredible work that the Big Lottery Fund has done on behalf of UK charities. The National Lottery Awards, whose funding derives primarily from sales of UK Lotto and Euromillions tickets, exists to earmark and celebrate the nation’s favourite lottery-funded projects, as well as the opportunities they have created for people and communities across the country.

Remembrance Day 2011 was apt that among that year’s winners was the heritage project, We Were Brothers, which serves to explore and remember the Nationalist and Unionist soldiers who fought closely alongside the British Army in WWI. Other winners included Hands That Talk, a UK Charity for the hard of hearing, and Hampshire Disability Cricket Programme, whose ‘Best Sports Project Award’ was presented by Olympic athlete Colin Jackson, and London 2012 Olympic hopeful Hannah England.

So even if you aren’t lucky enough to win huge National Lottery jackpots such as the £101,203,600.70 Euromillions jackpot won by the Cambridge couple Dave and Angela Dawes on the 7th October 2011, it’s comforting to know that, by buying a lottery ticket, a fraction of your money goes towards inspiring and well-deserving causes such as these!

And, all this begs the question: how much would you donate to charity if you were the lucky winner of a EuroMillions, UK Lotto, Spanish El Gordo, German Lotto or Italian SuperEnalotto jackpot win? A high percentage of those interviewed by the National Lottery recently revealed that if they did win a lottery jackpot they would almost certainly donate some to charity. What would you do?

UK Lotto jackpot winners Ray and Barbara Wragg are perhaps the most philanthropic lottery jackpot winners yet, having donated a staggering £5,500,000 in the years since their £7,600,000 jackpot win in 2000. Sheffield Children’s Hospital is among the lucky beneficiaries, as well as Weston Park Hospital and an admiral group of WWII veterans who used the donation to fund their trip to Italy in 2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino.

The subject of charity arguably makes getting your weekly UK Lotto and Euromillions results exciting for everyone! It’s warming to think that in times of national financial difficulty, those lucky enough to receive lottery jackpot wins look to help the most vulnerable members of society. So buy a lottery ticket today and donate to charity at the same time!
