Great Grandmother Judy Juntenen of Atlantic Mines, Upper Peninsula, Michigan won the Mega Millions lotto jackpot on 5th February 2013. She picked the winning Mega Millions numbers 2, 5, 10, 26, 44, and the Mega Ball of 46 but said these were random numbers and not special birthdays or other special dates.
Judy has four children, 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. It was one of her granddaughters who rang her to say that the $19 million winning Mega Millions lotto jackpot ticket had been bought at Festival Foods, 47401 M 26 in Houghton, as she knew her grandmother often bought her lottery tickets there. Juntenen says she has been buying lottery tickets from there for twenty years. Festival foods will receive a $50,000 bonus for selling the ticket with the winning Mega Millions numbers.
Judy Juntenen said first of all she went to search for her Mega Millions lottery ticket, just to make sure she hadn’t lost it. She checked the numbers and saw that she had won. Juntenen said, “I just didn’t believe it at first.” When she realised she had the winning Mega Millions numbers, she rang one of her sons, her daughter and her granddaughter. From there, the news spread very quickly throughout the family! “I always hoped I’d win,” said Judy, “But I never thought I would win a prize like this.”
Juntenen’s son said when he heard the news of the Mega Millions results that “My mind was well shot for the rest of the day. I didn’t know whether to believe her or not.” One of her daughters commented that she thought her mother was joking about her Mega Millions lottery success.
Another of Judy’s sons, Anthony, was worried that the phone call contained bad news, “We have had our share of bad luck and bad news recently, and this was a true blessing. I kind of walked round in a daze all day, letting the news sink in.”
Judy Juntenen drove 500 miles from her home in Atlantic Mine to Lansing, to claim her Mega Millions lotto jackpot. It took her ten hours, but at least she had her son and one of her daughters with her to keep her company while driving in dangerous snowy conditions. The only purchase Juntenen mentioned was a new 4 x 4 vehicle, which would be able to cope better in the snowy conditions where she lived – “one that will go through the snow better than the one I have now.
Judy has had a recent battle with cancer over the last year but has now been diagnosed as cancer free. Sadly, her husband died just over three years ago, he spent his whole life working in the copper mine, whereas Judy worked in the U.S. Postal Service until retirement. She wouldn’t reveal her age at the press conference and just pointed out that she had 22 grandchildren which would give people a clue to her age.
Judy Juntenen has decided to take the cash payout of $13.9 million which will give her $9,933,578 after taxes for her Mega Millions lottery prize. She intends to spoil her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren more than she already does and says she has received various requests from them. However, Judy says she has a lot of planning to do and will consult with financial advisers so that the money from the Mega Millions lotto jackpot is wisely invested to ensure that her family is financially secure from now on.
