An unemployed man from Dorchester, Massachusetts has scooped the Mega Millions lotto jackpot of $32 million. Candido Olveira, 47, had been so sure of his win that he said he didn’t need check his ticket to know he had the winning Mega Millions numbers and was a new multi-millionaire! Hearing the winning ticket had been sold at Tedeschi Food Shops on Neponset Avenue he knew he had won, having bought a mega millions ticket there the previous day. The winning numbers from the Mega Millions lottery draw held on August 19th 2011 were 15, 53, 54, 56 with a Mega Ball of 22.
Being so certain of his Massachusetts Mega Millions lotto jackpot win, rather than check the ticket he played his guitar for 2 days instead. A few days later the former record keeper took a break from his music and returned to the original store where he bought the ticket asking for a copy of the winning Mega Millions numbers. Returning home he confirmed that indeed he was the latest Mega Millions lottery success story. The store also benefits from the jackpot, with Hani El-Shurafa the owner, receiving $50,000 in commission.
Mr Oliveria then decided to visit lottery headquarters in Braintree to claim his Mega Millions lotto jackpot and dropped in unannounced. A lottery spokesperson said that Mr Oliveira seemed “nonplussed”. Most winners arrange to collect their cheques with either a lawyer or financial adviser. Mr Oliveira arrived with his girlfriend instead. After taxes he will take home around $15 million from his Mega Millions lottery prize. He did admit to being concerned about how people would treat him now that he had new found wealth. “I’m going to try and be the same” he said – money is not everything.
At a news conference when asked what he will do with his Massachusetts Mega Millions lottery money, the father of two said he would like to buy a house, take care of his family – many of whom live in Cape Verde - and possibly also treat himself to a new car. Having been let go from his job 2 years ago one reporter asked if he was still looking for a job and to much laughter he replied “I think I’m done”. His girlfriend, Edie Monteriom sat beside him during the press conference for his Mega Millions lotto jackpot win and at one point he turned to her and said “I don’t like cameras.” “He’s a simple person she reported – he leads a simple life. And as if to prove that point the couple left lottery HQ for Mr Oliveira to get back to playing guitar.
The last time Massachusetts produced a Mega Millions lottery winner was in July 2004 when a retired caretaker won a staggering $294 million.
