LAID-OFF

Joe had been laid off from his construction job in Spotsylvania County’s Partlow area and was living with his mother. The 47 year old was single and broke. “Around this time of year in 2009, I was unemployed and basically waiting for the race season to start, because that was always something I looked forward to,” Denette said, “I would sit there and work side jobs, work on houses for people, just enough to make ends meet.”

RADIO COMPETITION WINNER

In April 2009 Joe Denette won a radio competition which gave him tickets to the upcoming race at Richmond International Raceway. His brother Fred, shares Joe’s passion for NASCAR, so Joe offered to fly him up and share the prize. On the way to pick up his brother from the airport Denette bought 23 Mega Millions lottery tickets, choosing three sets of numbers himself and letting the computer choose the rest. The following morning, 2nd May 2009, Fred was in the bathroom and heard his brother and mother making a lot of noise. When he went to investigate, they made him sit down at the computer and check the Mega Millions results against his ticket. Denette had definitely won the $75.6 million Mega Millions prize.

Mr Denette was not going to miss going to the races, so he signed the winning lottery ticket and gave it to his mother for safe keeping and went off to spend the day as he had planned.

When Meagan (aged 33) started going out with Joe, she, and her two sons, were living with her parents. Joe asked Meagan if she was happy to have more kids as he really wanted a family. They were married in November 2009. Meagan says that she insisted on a prenuptial agreement, even though Joe said it wasn’t necessary. So if they should get divorced, Meagan will have a settlement figure and the house. “I never wanted him to think I was with him for the money,” she said, “I wanted him to know I loved him for him.”

BABIES

Mega Millions winner Joe Denette and his wife Meagan were having problems with getting pregnant, but eventually it happened, and Bentley was born in 2011. The couple wanted another child, but the gynaecologist told Joe that it wasn’t a good idea for Meagan to go through another pregnancy. So they decided to find a “gestational carrier” and they paid her $25,000 to carry their baby for them. When the surrogate mother was around five months pregnant, Meagan started to feel ill in the mornings. She couldn’t believe she could possibly be pregnant but took a pregnancy test anyway. To her shock and surprise, Meagan was having a baby. Brooklyn Paige, a daughter, was born on 4th December 2012 and Meagan gave birth to Hudson on 14th March 2013. Having two little babies in the house at the same time, plus a two year old must be hard work – but at least they can now afford to hire some help thanks to their Mega Millions lottery prize!
