P I Gold Lottery Club Members win Mega Millions Jackpot
Thirteen postal workers from Belleview, Michigan won half of the $93 million Mega Millions jackpot on 1st February 2011 – that comes to $46.5 million. The Mega Millions winners from Michigan called themselves the PI Gold Lottery Club and have been buying tickets for their club for over 12 years. PI Gold Lottery Club had another win of $10,000 in 2006.
Hosea Person worked overtime on 1st February and stopped at the Meijar Store on Belleville Road, Belleville on his way home to buy a few groceries and his Michigan Mega Millions lottery tickets. Twice a week Hosea Person buys $65’s worth of tickets for the PI Gold Lottery Club and has been doing this for the last 12 years. Hosea and his wife, Charlene, were watching the weather on TV that evening, to get an update on the incoming snow storm. As postal workers, this is obviously very important to them. When they saw their numbers come up, they knew they had won the Michigan Mega Millions jackpot. However, they didn’t quite believe it, so they pressed the reverse button on the PVR. Charlene Person read out the numbers, while Hosea Person checked them one by one.
Hosea Person said, “When we got to the end, we started screaming and hollering. It seemed like a dream.” When the Person’s had confirmed with Lottery officials that their Michigan Mega Millions lottery numbers, 16, 22, 23, 26, 35 and 31, had won, they started calling other members of the P I Gold Lottery Club. One of the winners was rung by his wife, while he was wading through snow, trying to deliver the mail. He thought his wife was joking and was not at all amused as he was freezing and miserable. “I told her to stop messing with me, because it’s cold outside.”
The Mega Millions winners from Michigan told Lottery officials that their favourite song is now, “We’re in the money.” Only Hosea and Charlene Person were at the cheque presentation, the other members of the P I Gold Lottery Club want to keep a low profile.
BACK TO WORK
The postal workers, who work at the Romulus priority mail processing centre, have opted for the cash payout and will receive $29 million after taxes for their Mega Millions jackpot. This means a payout of around $2.23 million per club member. The Person’s, who have two stakes in the club, will receive $4.46 million. Only one of the P I Gold Lottery Club members has retired and, at the moment, the others plan to go back to work.
Hosea Person mentioned the $10,000 win of 2006 and said, “I just felt in my heart, if we’d keep going, we’d win it. I’d like to thank God.”
The P I Gold Lottery Club say they will spend their Michigan Mega Millions lottery money by paying off their mortgages, buying new cars, sending their children and grandchildren to college and then give money to their favourite charities and churches. They are going to continue buying lottery tickets but have now decided to switch to the Powerball, as they feel their chances of winning the Mega Millions jackpot twice, are rather slim!
