You would think a bookie might have better luck and greater odds of winning, but not so according to the manager of E. Coomes Bookmakers, Paul Solomons. That is until he won £1m in the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle on Tuesday 26th February: “I have been working with winners for more than 30 years and seen some pretty large prizes, but I’ve never witnessed a pay-out like this before, let alone thought it would be for me!”
Before his EuroMillions win Mr. Solomons was in the ‘dog house’ with his wife! Going against his wife’s wishes, he popped to Balham for a haircut instead of going to Streatham as she had wanted. However his defiance paid off when he purchased a winning EuroMillions ticket from Sainsbury’s on Balham High Road. Wife Linda was pretty forgiving when he told her: “I’ve won a million quid.”
Although things could have been very different if he hadn’t remembered to check the ticket’s Millionaire Raffle code. Mr. Solomons said: “I was coming to the end of my shift at work – E. Coomes Bookmakers – when I remembered the EuroMillions ticket I’d brought when my missus was still less than happy with me! I checked the numbers on the TV, saw that they didn’t match and went to throw it in the bin and pack up for the night. I don’t know why I suddenly remembered the raffle element, but thank goodness I did. As the three letters matched, then the numbers, I was in total shock. I just sat there dumbfounded thinking, ‘I’m a millionaire’!”
This is great news for someone who didn’t consider himself lucky in life: “Other than meeting Linda, I’m not sure I’ve been lucky in life, and I’ve definitely never won anything significant before – this sort of thing just doesn’t happen to people like me. I’ve always had to work hard, nothing’s ever been easy, and I have to say I was dreading the future because I just didn’t know how we were going to make ends meet. I can’t believe that thanks to a lot of luck and a little quarrel with the missus, all that is in the past and our future is so bright.”
