Choosing to spend £20 on a EuroMillions lottery draw that takes place on Friday the 13th June might be considered a real gamble. However it paid off for pub landlord Nigel Willets, 48, as he won £1 million.

The father-of-four was rushed off his feet serving customers at the Bridgend Inn at Bedwas near Caerphilly, south of Wales, and didn’t get to check his ticket until 5pm the following day. Realising the ticket had won him £1 million he went back to the Tesco store where he’d purchased the EuroMillions ticket, and was shaking as he received confirmation of the big win.

He rushed back to his pub to give the regulars his amazing news: “I just wanted all the people I love, my family and friends around me to share my good fortune.” He certainly did that as he celebrated his big win with an all-night lock in: “I’m only licensed to stay open until one but I’m a millionaire now so I didn’t care. All the drinks were on the house and I celebrated with my usual tipple, cider and black – about eight pints of it.” Heaven knows what state they were all in when the eight-hour party finally ended at 6am.

Nigel didn’t mind at all that the draw had taken place on Friday the 13th: “It was a very lucky for me. I’m not normally very superstitious but when you realise it is Friday the 13th it’s on your mind. But I won my fortune on that day – and it will always be lucky for me now.”

Lots of lottery winners decide to spend some of their winnings buying a country pub. Well this winner is a step ahead already because he already owns one. Willets has been running the pub for the past six years, and will use part of his winnings to pay off his mortgage. “I love it here. My customers mean the world to me” said the delighted winner.

Also on his shopping list is a brand new Range Rover and he is planning to take his partner Jane Whittingham on holiday in the Maldives.
