A lucky lottery player from Barcelona, one of the most celebrated cities in Spain, has won big on the EuroJackpot lottery by taking home a €31.5 million top prize.

In the draw held last Friday, October 9th, it was revealed that one player across all of the many different member countries in Europe had matched the winning five main numbers and the two Euro Numbers to take home the entire jackpot for themselves. It has now been revealed that the one lucky ticket holder was actually found in Spain, in Barcelona, marking the first ever time that the top prize of this multi-national jackpot has been won in the country, but not the largest prize to have ever been won in Barcelona, as that was the EuroMillions prize worth €48 million, won by a player in the city in May of this year.

The EuroJackpot lottery in Spain is run by “ONCE”, a not for profit organisation that uses its proceeds to support people with disabilities, such as blind or deaf people. Lottery agents that sell tickets for the EuroJackpot lottery belong to ONCE, and many of them suffer from disabilities themselves. The EuroJackpot lottery has undergone many changes in its short lifetime, with the most recent promising higher jackpots for lottery players such as this one, worth an astounding €35.1 million.

The seller of last Friday’s winning ticket was Antonio Rodriguez, whose store is found in the Les Corts district of Barcelona. Mr Rodriguez’ neighbourhood is currently celebrating their annual “Fiesta Mayor”, and somebody in that district now has even more to celebrate thanks to the ticket sold by their neighbour. Mr Rodriguez said that he has been selling EuroJackpot tickets with ONCE for seven years, and that he sold the winning ticket from one of his two selling points, both of which are located in Calle Joan Güell. Unfortunately, we may never get to hear about the lucky winner themselves, thanks to the tradition of many EuroJackpot winners remaining anonymous.

Despite this being a historical first time that the EuroJackpot lottery has been won in Spain, there has been a big winner from the country within the last few months. On May 15th, one player from Bellvitge de L’Hospitalet, another district of Barcelona, won the second tier prize after matching the five main numbers and one out of the two Euro Numbers, winning them a prize worth over €7 million. If that player had matched one more number, they would have found themselves with a jackpot worth €90 million, which went on to be won by a player from the Czech Republic.
