£161M EUROMILLIONS WINNERS HELP MAKE PARTICK THISTLE DEBT FREE
Football clubs all over the world are in debt but not so Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle. Their debts have just been paid off thanks to £161m EuroMillions winner Christine and Colin Weir.
Along with current shareholder Billy Allan, the lottery winners have become shareholders of the club who currently sit ninth in the Scottish Premiership. Now thanks to the cash injection, the club, known as ‘The Jags’ have secured a deal with the Bank of Scotland to become debt free.
Both Christine and Colin will now hold a five-per-cent stake in the club and have gifted a further 19.28 per cent of shares to the newly established Partick Thistle Football Club Trust. Last year the couple, who won their £161m EuroMillions jackpot in 2011, donated over £2.5m to the Yes Campaignas Scotland bid for independence.
In a world where football clubs struggle financially, Partick Thistle Chairman David Beattie believes the investment will provide the club with financial security for the future. Speaking about the investment, Beattie said he was delighted that the investment came from what he calls “Thistle people.” He added that the cash injection will allow Partick to “start a new chapter in the history of the club.”
EuroMillions winner Colin told reporters that his financial outlay was all about attempting to help a club that has always been his footballing first love. “I have been a Jags fan since I was a boy and have spent many hours at Firhill, some of them more enjoyable than others!” He added that the couple also support the establishment of the Trust as it will “give fans a greater say in their club.”
Earlier this year, we reported how £4.8m EuroMillions winners Lee and Sue Mullen made a £50,000 investment in National League side Grimsby Town. In July former Chelsea player Terry Bradbury won a £5.5m UK Lotto jackpot. Another sports related winner was former curling champion Suzanne Birt who won a $500,000 on an Atlantic Lottery Classic Ruby scratchcard. Cardiff City supporter Matthew Evans even considered buying a house nearer his beloved Cardiff City’s ground after his £2.6m UK Lotto win.
