A couple from Edmonton in Western Canada have won their third lottery prize between them, and they plan to travel the world now that they’re millionaires thanks to the Lotto 649.
Barbara and Douglas Fink, from Edmonton, Alberta, won a huge $8.1 million on the Lotto 649 game back in February, but it’s not the first time they’ve had lottery luck. In 1989, Douglas Fink shared $128,000 with four of his friends when they won on another Lotto 649 ticket, and just seven years ago in 2010, the couple won a $100,000 Extra prize together. Other lottery players have won their biggest prize the third time, such as Sharon Collins who won £25,000 on the People’s Postcode Lottery after three £10 wins, and another Lotto 649 player from British Columbia who won his third big prize in a year last April.
The most recent winnings, worth $8.1 million, are worth a lot more than previous wins, and Barbara Fink said she had no idea how much she’d won, even after she checked the numbers online. After the February 22nd drawing, Mrs Fink checked her Lotto 649 ticket online and called her husband, who was working out of time, to tell him straight away.
“I knew we had all the numbers, but I didn’t know how many winners there were,” Mrs Fink told lottery officials. In fact, there were only two winners of the Lotto 649 jackpot, worth $16.3 million, with the other ticket being sold in Ontario. “I called Douglas back before midnight and told him it was more than $8 million.”
A recent Lotto Max winner from Alberta said that she felt “too old” to have become a millionaire, but we’re sure that’s not how the Finks feel. A British Columbia couple were elated after their $9 million Lotto 649 win, so much so that they didn’t even tell their kids!
The total prize that the Finks won was $8,163,061.10, more than ten times what they’ve won on the lottery in the past, and they told Lotto 649 officials that they plan to use their winnings to travel around the world, just like Clive Osbourne from Wales planned after his big UK Lotto win, buy themselves a new home and help out their daughters and grandchildren. “Family comes first,” said Mrs Fink.
The winning ticket was a free play which Mrs Fink won on a previous draw, and redeemed it at Northlands Park in Edmonton.
