2017 saw some massive lottery wins throughout Europe. Let’s look back through the year and tell the story of those life-changing wins.
January got off to a good start with five tickets sharing a €90m EuroJackpot top prize. The first big EuroMillions jackpot happened in the last week of January. A ticket sold in Ireland won a €88.58m EuroMillions jackpot.Just a day later, one lucky ticket won a €31m Lotto 6 aus 49 top prize. A busy month ended with James Couper from Scotland scooping a £4.3m UK Lotto top prize.
Italy had reason to celebrate in late February with a ticket sold in Mestrino winning the €93.72m SuperEnalotto top prize. The following month it was Portugal’s turn to cheer as a ticket sold there won a €80,571,199 EuroMillions jackpot.
It’s never easy to match the six main balls in the UK Lotto draw, but sometimes you don’t need to do that to win the jackpot. That’s what happened in April when after a series of rollovers, the top prize had to be won and two tickets shared a £25.44m UK Lotto jackpot. That happened again in December when a ticket landed a £24.43m top prize.
Continental success continued in May with a Belgian ticket winning a €153,873m EuroMillions jackpot. Portugal had another win in July at a time when there were two EuroMillions jackpots won in the space of three draws and another €36.56m jackpot in August. September saw three EuroMillions jackpots in the space of four draws but then it suddenly became a bit more difficult to win that top prize.
The wait for another big win in Italy ended in August with a ticket sold in Caorle scooping the €77.73m SuperEnalotto jackpot.
September saw a €130m EuroMillions Superdrawbut still no winner. The rollovers continued until early October when a ticket sold in Spain won a record €190m EuroMillions top prize.
The UK had some success in November when a syndicate of dinner ladies in Wales won a £25m EuroMillions jackpot. Later in the month there was an £18,188,218 UK Lotto jackpot win and a €45.785m La Primitiva win. The EuroJackpot draw saw the top prize won three weeks in a row.
December saw success for Switzerland with a CHF157,096,272.80 EuroMillions top prize. The year ended almost as it began with a ticket sold in Ireland winning a €38.9m EuroMillions jackpot. Let’s hope there will be plenty more big wins in 2018!
