The People’s Postcode Lottery produces some great wins for its players. However, it also helps a number of charities. One of these is Missing People and over £7.5 million has been raised for them and it has kept them going through lockdown.

Missing People is a national charity and it’s based in East Sheen in London, England. They have been receiving funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery for the past 13 years. The charity offers free and confidential support, whether it be over the phone, email, online chat or text messages. You might remember their choir taking part in Britain’s Got Talent.

There are an estimated 176,000 people a year who go missing. The charity coordinates a UK wide network to help find these people. This includes businesses and media but of course all of this costs a great deal of money.

Easing the Pain

Missing People aim to help ease the pain of those who have had friends or relatives who have gone missing. They also help those who have gone missing helping them to safely return home.

Lockdown was a difficult time and the charity saw an increase in the number of vulnerable adults contacting them. The problems in being unable to access support services has not helped, especially when it comes to mental health problems. The pandemic has also affected the charities funding levels.

The help received from the People’s Postcode Lottery has been greatly appreciated. Jo Youle is the Chief Executive of Missing People. She says that the funding received has “enabled us to stay open, work remotely, including our amazing helpline team.” She added that this has helped them support over 9000 people.

Honoured to Help

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, realizes just how important a job Missing People do. “The support that Missing People provide is crucial to people all over the country,” she said. Regards the huge amount that has been raised for Missing People, she commented that they are “honoured” at being able to do that.

Missing People can be contacted confidentially on 116 000 or email them at 116000@missingpeople.org.uk. Calls are free and that’s possible due to the help of the People’s Postcode Lottery who hold draws every week. This shows just how important lotteries are with over £700 million already raised by their players.
