Powerball Winner John San Cartier, aged 33, of the 58th Training Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a lottery reward of $93.4 million. John went to his local store, Raley’s at 6200 Coors NW in Albuquerque to buy some milk.
He only had two items on his shopping list: milk and a Powerball lottery Quick Pick ticket. “If I hadn’t been short of milk, I probably wouldn’t have bought the ticket,” San Cartier said, as he doesn’t play Powerball regularly.
San Cartier said, “I was taking my daughter to school on my way to work the next day. I heard on the radio that someone from New Mexico had won the Powerball jackpot. I went home in the afternoon and checked online. I started shaking and called my wife. She said, ‘No way!’”
Many stories of Powerball lotto winners tell us of how the lucky winners don’t believe their eyes or ears and John San Cartier is no different. He checked the New Mexico Lottery website, the Powerball website and every news story he could find. He finally decided to go to Raley’s, where he had bought his ticket with the winning Powerball numbers, to see if he was about to receive the Powerball reward of $93.4 million. All he asked for was a print out of the winning Powerball results.
John now knew for certain that he was about to become a multi millionaire, so he quickly placed his winning Powerball lotto ticket in a safety deposit box.
San Cartier had heard stories of Powerball lotto winners who had been hounded for loans and handouts and he didn’t want this in his life, so he tried to keep his win a secret. Unfortunately, you can’t keep such a big secret for long and slowly the news spread. “I wanted to run out screaming in the streets, ‘It’s me, hey everyone, it’s me,’ San Cartier told everyone at the press conference.
The winning Powerball numbers were 13, 31, 36, 38, 49 and a Powerball of 2. John has opted to take the cash payout of $52.2 million and will receive $36 million after taxes. He is determined that his family remain anonymous and refused to give any details at all about his life. He says he has no debt to clear but added, “It’s going to be good for me and my family.”
Most winners choose the cash option for example Lan Nguyen for his $116.8 million Powerball jackpot win in 2006.
San Cartier says he hasn’t had time to decide exactly what to do with the Powerball jackpot money but knows that his children’s college education will no longer cause him sleepless nights. “I don’t have anything specific that I am going to buy.” The only thing he wants is “peace and quiet”, and says that he has had to permanently disconnect his phone. At least he has the money from the Powerball lotto to move to a quiet area and try and fall off the radar.
