The Powerball game in South Africa was started on October 23rd, 2009. In the beginning, players had to choose 5 main numbers from1 to 45 and one Powerball number from a range of 1 to 20.
In November 2015, new rules were introduced. The range of main numbers became 50 instead of 45. A small prize for matching only the Powerball number was also added, giving more possibilities to win.
As from 2015 the South Africa National Lottery operator is Ithuba, and 34% of revenue is paid to a central charitable distribution fund.
The starting jackpot is an estimated R3 million, and it normally increases quite quickly, reaching substantial amounts.
