The Spanish Christmas Lottery

The “Lotería de Navidad”, also known as El Gordo (“The Fat One”), is Spain’s most famous and beloved lottery. The draw takes place each year on 22 December at the Teatro Real in Madrid. The top prize, El Gordo, awards €4,000,000 per series (€400,000 per décimo).

Each ticket is divided into 10 décimos. Players usually purchase one or more décimos, since each five-digit number (0000099999) is printed across multiple series. For the 2025 edition, 198 series have been issued.

The lottery is renowned for its wide prize distribution. In addition to the main El Gordo prize, there are many secondary prizes, including the traditional Pedrea. In total, €2,772,000,000 in prizes will be distributed in 2025.
