$100,000 WIN TURNS OUT TO BE A $1M LOTTO MAX PRIZE

Earlier this week we told you how Michele Poussin from Santa Monica in California used a set of family birthdates to win a $697,111 MegaMillions prize. Chi Vinh La from Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada uses the same method but that’s not how he won $1m in the Lotto Max draw held on Friday May 22. Instead it was one of his Quick Pick selections that made him a lottery millionaire.

The lottery winner purchased his winning Lotto Max ticket from the Real Canadian Superstore on McPhillips Street in Winnipeg. His winning numbers in the May 22 draw were: 05-06-08-19-25-27-28 and they matched all seven numbers from one of the 33 sets of Maxmillions numbers drawn.

The lucky winner gave some brief information to Western Canada Lottery officials. La says he plays the Lotto Max game “almost every week” and “every now and then I play my own numbers.”

Eager to find out if his Lotto Max ticket was a winner, Chi went to a self-checker and simply couldn’t believe what he saw. “My eyes don’t always work that well” he said and revealed he thought his win was just $100,000. It’s not uncommon for lottery players to initially underestimate the size of their winnings. Charles and Deborah Bibbs thought they’d only won $250,000 but actually won a $1m Mega Millions prize.

Seeking confirmation, he took his Lotto Max ticket home and asked his son to check the results on his computer. Then he discovered the true value of his lottery win and just like Lotto Max winner Brittany Powell from British Colombia, he’d won a $1m prize.

Weeks later, the lottery winner still can’t quite believe what’s happened. “This has changed my life. Not just my life, my family’s.” When Welshman Clive Osbourne became a UK Lotto millionaire he used part of his winnings to go travelling and that’s just what La also plans on doing. He plans to use his Lotto Max winnings to do some travelling and put some of it aside to help pay for his children’s education and like $40m Lotto Max winner Tom Crist, he wants to help the less fortunate.
