Fish and Chips Supper Leads to $9.33m New Zealand Lotto Powerball Win

A man from Hamilton in New Zealand won a $9.33m Lotto Powerball jackpot in the August 8 draw but also managed to lose his mid-morning snack at the same time.

The winner is the father of a young family but has decided to remain anonymous. It was last week when he was on his way home from his job in Auckland that he stopped off in Otahuhu to get a fish and chips supper. While waiting for them to be cooked he popped next door to the Downtown Diary and got a Lotto Powerball ticket for the August 8 draw.

He put the ticket in his wallet but it wasn’t until Monday that he checked it. That’s like $110m Powerball winner Willie Nelson from California, USA, who waited three days before checking his ticket. It’s not as long as $1m Powerball player from Washington State, USA who kept his ticket in his jacket pocket for a month.

The lucky winner had missed out on breakfast so in mid-morning got himself a chicken pie. He remembered that lottery ticket so finally got it checked. He joked: “I have the winning ticket mate” and was “absolutely gobsmacked” when the assistant told him that he’d won $9,333,333. So shocked was he that he left his snack at the counter.

It’s the latest big Lotto Powerball win after a family from Rotorua won $24.3m in June on the same lottery and a retired truck driver received a winning Powerball ticket as a present in January. When the anonymous Lotto Powerball winner phoned his wife with the good news she didn’t initially believe him. He finally convinced her and she broke down in tears. The lucky player commented: “Then we dreamed about all the ways our lives would change and all the good we could do with the winnings. It was a really special moment.”

The couple want to “make life easier for those around us as well”. This includes organising 500 Christmas hampers and helping local charities and groups. Last Christmas we told you how $365m Powerball winner Alain ‘Derek’ Maboussou from Nebraska, USA donated to a homeless shelter.

The winning numbers in the August 8 draw were: 02-13-18-22-26-39 and the Powerball 04.
