A lottery player from Maryland in the USA told lottery officials how he didn’t sleep a wink the night after he realised that he’d won $15,000 on a Mega Millions ticket.
The lottery player, who didn’t reveal his identity but did tell Maryland Lottery officials that he works in law enforcement, perhaps the reason for his chosen anonymity, is from Montgomery Village, and won his $15,000 on a Mega Millions ticket on the drawing on June 3rd. The winner said that he bought four tickets for the drawing at the beginning of the month, but didn’t check them until a few days later, when he decided to go back to the lottery retailer and buy another ticket.
Just days after a Maryland hairdresser claimed her $10,000 lottery prize in Baltimore and a Maryland Lottery playing couple won more than $50,000 to take them closer to retirement, this particular Maryland Lottery player checked the four Mega Millions tickets before buying tickets for the next draw, and didn’t win anything on the first three. It wasn’t until he scanned the fourth ticket that he saw something he’d never expected, and had never seen before.
“It said ‘Cash at Lottery,’ and I’d never seen that before,” the Mega Millions winner told Maryland Lottery officials. “I didn’t know what it meant. So I waited for the machine to reset and I tried it a second time and it said it again. So I asked the guy to print me the winning numbers report from the last drawing,” the lottery winner said of his confusion.
The law enforcement worker said that he got himself a Chinese takeaway and took his tickets and the print out of the winning numbers from June 3rd home, and worked out the meaning of the mystery message as he was eating. “Oh, man, I was stunned,” the Maryland resident said, adding that he didn’t sleep at all that night. He’s not the only lottery winner who had a takeaway when he won his prize, like Ann Munday from Ely who won £100,000 on a scratch card after going out to get some fish and chips for dinner.
The first thing he did was abandon his takeaway, unlike Jeff and Davina Pritchard from Wales who celebrated their £1 million EuroMillions win with a slap-up Chinese takeaway, and call his parents to give them the good news, telling them that they’d never believe what had just happened to him. “The most I’d ever won before was $100,” he told lottery officials.
The winning ticket, purchased at a 7-Eleven store in Gaithersburg, matched four out of the five main numbers in the Mega Millions drawing, and also matched the Mega Ball. The lucky winner said that he’ll be using his winnings to pay off some bills.
