There have been massive celebrations in the Acacias neighbourhood of Madrid in Spain, after tickets there had the winning number in Spain’s 2.31 billion euros El Gordo de Navidad draw. Each winner will receive 400,000 euros, and a lucky one will get €4m.

The winning tickets for the El Gordo de Navidad draw, that took place on Thursday 22 December, were all sold from one office in Acacias. Players just couldn’t believe that their tickets matched the winning number 66513. previously reported how Madrid sold more El Gordo de Navidad tickets than any other area.

People could be seen celebrating in shops and bars close to the lottery office. They weren’t the only ones as there were more than 2.3 billion prizes won in this years’ El Gordo de Navidad lottery draw.

One lucky winner was bank worker Marian Lopez, 37, who is four months pregnant and shared her 400,000 euros win with her mother. “The ‘Fat One’ has struck me twice,” she joked, referring to her slight bulge and the nickname for the El Gordo de Navidad lottery. The lucky winner plans on using some of her winnings to refurbish her house.

Last year Ngagne Pouye won a 400,000 euros El Gordo de Navidad prize allowing him to return to his native Senegal.

Vicente Villaverde, 44, a gas company worker who lives across the street from the lottery office, said he has bought tickets ending in 13 for the past six years.”As I have had so much bad luck in my life, I have always said the number 13 will bring me fortune. And this year it has!” the not so unlucky now winner commented. He plans on paying for speech classes for his seven-year-old son who has Down Syndrome. Also planned is buying his girlfriend a car.”The ham, the champagne, the whisky are on me this year!” he told his partner over the phone.

Even the owner of the lottery office that sold the winning tickets is a winner. Augustin Ramos has only had the store for four months and bought one of the winning tickets. His wife, Maria Josefa Rojo Cabrera said, “I felt happiness seeing that those that won needed it.”

El Gordo de Navidad draw distributed a total of 2.31 billion euros this year, up 3.5 percent on last year when the winning El Gordo de Navidad tickets were bought in Almeria, Spain. Players will have another chance to win big prizes with the El Nino draw on 6 January.
