Brett McCoy and his wife Robin Walker headed down to the McLeod Trading Post in Peers in Alberta, Canada to pick up chicken feed and treats for their children. While there, the couple scanned their lottery tickets and discovered they had won $60m in the September 22 Lotto Max draw.
It was Robin who scanned their Lotto Max ticket while her husband waited in their car and when finding out about their big win rushed out to tell her husband about their win but said it was only $60,000. Then a store clerk came rushing after her and suggested she re-count the zeros because they had actually scooped the $60m Lotto Max jackpot. Kevin Young from Virginia, USA, won a $7.5m Mega Millions jackpot but initially thought he’d not won anything.
Their winning Lotto Max ticket had successfully matched 02-10-37-38-43-47 to win the top prize. Unlike Judy Finchum from California, USA, who used birthdays and anniversaries when winning a $133.2m Powerball jackpot, this couple purchased a quick pick ticket.
McCoy is a pipeline worker and met his future wife while working at the same oilfield. The couple now own a hobby farm and his wife looks after their four children. Susan Herdman from England won £1,182,714 playing UK Lotto and now works on a farm.
Recently they have had two $100 wins and had been joking with neighbours that it was a sign of a big win to come. That’s what happened to Judy Knable from Kansas, USA, who had smaller wins before landing a $30,000 win on a Birthday Bash scratch card.
The shocked couple describe themselves as “common, every-day, blue-collar Albertans” and early plans for their winnings include expanding their farm. Already purchased is a new truck which they used to drive to the venue where they were presented with their Lotto Max cheque. Trucks are a popular purchase and that’s just what Michael Todd from Maryland, USA, purchased after winning $100,000 on a “$100 Grand” scratch card.
When talking about her initial mistake, Robin said “I was pretty excited when I thought it was $60,000.” McCoy added “She can buy all the chickens she wants now.” The couple come from Peers which is 180km west of Edmonton and in 2016 had a population of just 98. It’s the latest big win there after two previous Lotto 6/49 jackpot wins.
