It’s easy to forget something but Kerry McGowan from Cavan in Ireland, has to thank her father for a €112,469 Irish Lotto win in the December 27, 2017 draw.

The lucky Irish Lotto winner didn’t buy her ticket herself. Her father, Peter McGowan realised on the day of the draw, that perhaps his daughter hadn’t purchased an Irish Lotto ticket so got one from Costcutters on Railway Road, Cavan.

His daughter had indeed forgotten to purchase an Irish Lotto ticket for the December 27 draw. She recalled, “It was that time over Christmas where you struggle to know what day it is as you are out of your routine.”

“It was a very shrewd call by dad to think of me and buy me a quick pick. Otherwise, I would definitely have forgotten to play, and we wouldn’t be sitting here now!” the jubilant Irish Lotto winner said. In England, Alan Slater bought a £149,089.30 winning EuroMillions ticket and so did his wife, so they got a double win.

This turns out even more to be a story about forgetfulness. That’s because her father forgot all about the Irish Lotto ticket and left it on the kitchen table. The day after the draw, Mrs McGowan was looking at the Costcutters Facebook page and saw that the shop in Cavan had sold an Irish Lotto ticket that had matched five of the main balls and the Bonus Ball.

“I took hold of the ticket and checked the numbers on the National Lottery website,” she said. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. When dad came in from walking the dog I got him to double check and sure enough, I had won.” Footballer Kevin O’Connor won a €1m Irish Lotto prize with a ticket bought for him by his uncle.

Kerry collected her €112,469 Irish Lotto winnings alongside her parents, Peter and Margaret, her brother Connor McGowan and his partner Mary Donohoe. The win came shortly after she’d started a new job at ATA Group in Cavan. A couple in Colorado, USA, won a $90m Powerball top prize just after celebrating a birthday.

Two days after her lucky win, a family in Ireland won a €38.9m EuroMillions jackpot. Also celebrating were a €3.8m Irish Lotto winning syndicate from co Cork.

The winning numbers in the December 27 Irish Lotto draw were 17-20-22-24-25-40 and the Bonus Ball 18.
