A man from Calgary who won $5 million on the Lotto 649 right at the beginning of the year is planning a Panama cruise to celebrate.
Derek Maher, from Calgary in Western Canada, won his $5 million on the January 3rd Lotto 649 drawing, and he didn’t find out about his fortune until a couple of days after the draw when he took his ticket into a local store to check it.
Mr Maher revealed that he visited his local 7-Eleven to check his Lotto 649 ticket, and used the self-checking machine. A lottery winner from Kansas had to get her brother to double check her lottery ticket for her when she won over $3 million, and she also planned to celebrate her Super Kansas Cash win with a cruise.
The winner said that as soon as he scanned it, he knew he’d won something big, but he wasn’t sure exactly how much. Another Calgary lottery winner said she was shocked by the size of the number when she scanned her Lotto Max winning ticket. Mr Maher ended up calling his daughter to come to the store and asked her to help him figure out how much he had won. Once she arrived, she soon worked out that her father was the sole winner of a $5 million Lotto 649 jackpot. Last year a group of co-workers from Calgary claimed a $1 million Lotto Max prize in total disbelief.
The Lotto 649 winner said that he hasn’t made a lot of plans for his winnings just yet, as $5 million is quite an amount to take in, but he is thinking about taking a cruise to Panama with his mother. A recent Powerball winner from Maryland was off on a cruise after winning $100,000, as he planned to take his entire family. Mr Maher also plans to use his $5 million to provide financial security for his children. Last week we told you about a Virginia man who won $1 million on the Mega Millions and planned to put it towards his children’s educations.
Mr Maher’s winning Lotto 649 ticket was purchased from a 7-Eleven store located on Crowfoot Way N.W. in Calgary.
