A couple from Hamilton in New Jersey, USA, have claimed a $1 million prize which they won on the Powerball lottery, and described their good luck as “crazy”.

The winning ticket was sold at a store in Hamilton called Risoldi’s and was quite a mystery for a few weeks as the lucky couple hadn’t yet checked their tickets. The winners were Maureen and Bill Odas, an elementary school teacher and retired state worker, and they told New Jersey Lottery officials that they have a system for playing their tickets. Only a few days ago we told you about a New Jersey Powerball player who won $315.3 million.

Mr Odas’ job is to purchase the tickets, while his wife checks them online after the drawing takes place, sometimes taking them into a store to scan them. This particular ticket was a Quick Pick Powerball entry, purchased for the drawing on March 28th, but Mrs Odas didn’t get around to checking the ticket for a few weeks after the winning draw. A EuroMillions winning syndicate from Scotland almost didn’t check their £1 million ticket at all after the leader got drawing dates mixed up.

“I couldn’t believe it. We were happy. We were in shock,” the Powerball winner told officials of the moment that they realised they had won the $1 million. “It was crazy,” Mr Odas added, and the owner of Risoldi’s store felt the same way. A New Jersey woman recently shared a $50,000 Maryland Powerball prize with a long-time friend.

“This is our biggest winner, I believe, to date,” store owner Sam Risoldi told Powerball lottery officials. “We haven’t had one this big.” The store also received a $2,000 bonus from the Powerball lottery for selling a jackpot winning ticket. A lottery retailer in Ireland was also delighted when they sold their biggest winning ticket worth £1 million on the UK Lotto.

The New Jersey couple said that they now plan to use the money to make sure they have a comfortable future, both for themselves and their family, just like a recent New York Lottery scratch card winner who was set for life thanks to his big win. Mr Odas said the only splurge he plans to make, now that the Powerball winnings are in the bank, is for a pair of black leather dance shoes, so that they can go out dancing to celebrate.
