GROUP WINS $60M LOTTO MAX JACKPOT ON FRIDAY THE 13TH
A group of five men from Ottawa, Canada, who have been playing the lottery for over ten years didn’t have an unlucky Friday the 13th. In fact, it was the exact opposite as they landed the $60m Lotto Max jackpot in that evenings draw.
Bryan Redman, Christopher Beazley, Gilles Dionne, Norman MacDonald and Stephane Dionne will share the $60m Lotto Max jackpot, each receiving $12m. The five Lotto Max winners all IT professionals who work for the federal government.
The five take it in turns each week to buy their Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 tickets but Bryan only remembered to buy them when stopping off at Mr Gas in Orleans to fill up his tank. They tend to switch between using their own numbers and buying quick pick tickets, it was the latter method that won them their $60m Lotto Max jackpot. In the UK, David Willetts was another Friday the 13th winning with a £1m EuroMillions windfall.
It was on Saturday morning that Bryan discovered that their numbers 01-04-05-22-25-32-34 had won the $60m Lotto Max jackpot. He double-checked the results and when the Lotto Max win was confirmed, he recalled how “I got back in my car, locked the door and started dialling numbers, crying and shaking – but no one was answering their phones!” he laughed.
Eventually he contacted Giles who was half asleep at the time and all he could hear was Bryan shouting “We did it! We did it.” He couldn’t believe it when he finally realized what his fellow syndicate member was going on about.
Later that evening all five Lotto Max winners went to again scan their winning ticket. Dionne commented: “When the lottery terminal shut down, that’s when it all started to feel real.” It also took a lot of persuading for Robert Thomas from South Carolina, USA, to convince him of his $2m Powerball prize.
There have been calls for higher Lotto Max jackpots, but this group of winners seem happy enough, though they want to stay busy and won’t be quitting their jobs. That’s just like £148m EuroMillions winner Adrian Bayford who recently opened a record store.
They do plan to spend a lot of time travelling. “It’s not just that we can travel more – it’s that we can travel anywhere in the world!” said Christopher. Canadians Jefremar and Lucille Estoque want to go to Hawaii after their $100,000 Lotto Max win.
