A Year of Lottery Success in Alberta

We all dream of winning a massive lottery prize. That win could be just one ticket away just as it was last year for several players in Alberta, Canada.

The biggest winner of 2022 was Pritpal Chahal from Edmonton. He won a $17.18 Lotto 6/49 jackpot in the July 30 draw. His win was so large that he admits having to “count the numbers.” It took eight scans of his winning ticket before he was convinced that he’d become a multi-millionaire.

How much have I won?

Some lottery players do initially think they’ve won a different amount. Another Edmonton resident, Cuong Ho won a $1 million Lotto 6/49 prize in September. However, initially she thought her win was only $1,000. Even when a cashier revealed it was $1 million that had been won, “my brain still wouldn’t compute the amount,” she said.

It can happen in reverse though. The following month Linda Gordon from High Prairie won $100,000 playing the Lotto Max draw. The lottery player didn’t have her glasses on when checking her ticket and at first thought she’d won $1 million. When finally putting her glasses on the true amount was revealed but she was still “in absolute shock” about her windfall.

Look in your wallet

Not every lottery winner discovers their success right away. Megan Klain from Red Deer won $1 million in the October 7 Lotto Max draw. It was three weeks later when cleaning out her wallet that she found her winning ticket.

It was a similar situation for Krista Castagna from Sedgewick. June saw her win a $100,000 Lotto Max prize but her lottery ticket stayed in her wallet until November. “I was in disbelief,” said Krista who planned on using some of her winnings to pay her mortgage.

Also in “disbelief” was Remee Richard from Spirit River. He won $1 million playing the Lotto Max draw in October. The lottery winner pledged to save his windfall saying that “I’m young, and I’m fortunate to have everything.”
