Alberta couple are country’s newest millionaires thanks to Lotto 649 win
Back to news

A couple from Alberta have become Canada’s latest multi-millionaires after claiming a $12.5 million jackpot that they won on a ticket bought for a February Lotto 649 drawing.Stella Sacrey and her partner Edward Philpott, from Wetaskiwin County in Alberta, bought their Lotto 649 ticket for the drawing in on February 28th from a Petro Canada gas station at Pigeon Lake in Westerose. Ms Sacrey told lottery officials that she checked their Lotto 649 ticket the morning after the draw took place and checked each of their lines from the bottom of the ticket upwards. Last year another Albertan became a Lotto 649 millionaire and planned to buy a new house and guitar.“We won $2 on EXTRA, but it wasn’t really what I was hoping for,” she told lottery officials, explaining that she’d heard about two Albertan $100,000 winners, and wondered if she was one. However, once she reached the top of the ticket, and checked the numbers against those in the drawing, she realised that their ticket had matched all six main winning Lotto 649 numbers and was actually worth a lot more than $2, over $12 million in fact. Another recent Alberta Lotto 649 winner was a man from Fort McMurray whose win allowed him to rebuild his home after it was destroyed by wildfires. The winning numbers were 3, 14, 36, 38, 40 and 48. Mr Philpott said that he was surprised beyond belief when his partner came to tell him the good news, and in fact, he was still asleep! A National Lottery scratch card winner from England had to wake his wife up with the good news after he discovered a £300,000 jackpot. “I didn’t believe her at first. You always hope you’ll win something big, but it’s overwhelming when you do,” said Mr Philpott, just like an Ontario Lotto 649 winner who took home $9 million earlier this year, and was so overwhelmed he’d not thought about how to spend it.The couple’s Lotto 649 ticket was worth $12,506,188.10, but they told lottery officials that they haven’t quite decided how to spend the money. “We both would like to do some travelling,” said Ms Sacrey. “I’d like to go to Ireland, and Ed has always wanted to go to Hawaii.” Two friends from California shared $1 million won on a second chance lottery, and planned travel to Europe and Hawaii.Give your dreams a chance and purchase your tickets online at
