Breast Cancer Survivor Wins £1m scratchcard prize

It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks for Maxine Lloyd from Kettering in Northamptonshire, England. There has been some good news though, topped by winning £1m playing the National Lottery £30m Mega Cash Showdown scratchcard.

The 50-year-old has been receiving breast cancer treatment and her fiance Wayne Tilbury ended up in hospital after he collapsed with a chest infection. While she was looking after him, Maxine decided to “have a flutter” on the scratchcard and it won her £1m.

Important message

While receiving some more treatment, Maxine received a phone notification. At first she thought it was from Wayne as he wasn’t allowed to be with her while receiving her radiotherapy. However, it was actually a message from her bank. It told her that the £1m had been transferred into her account.

Not just as Maxine, who is an NHS occupational therapist become a scratchcard millionaire, her breast cancer treatment has also successfully come to an end. It’s not surprising that she says: “I feel really lucky.” The scratchcard winner added: “I'm here, I'm alive, and we've just had a bit of a cherry on the top of the cake really."

With the scratchcard winnings in the bank, her first purchase was an iWatch. The couple are also looking to buy a house that came on the market the day the £1m was won.

Give something back

Maxine didn't initially want to go public about her win. That decision was changed so that she can help spread awareness of the need to check for breast cancer. Her desire is to “give something back” for all the treatment she has to endure.

Her message is simple but one that can and does save lives. “I’m really passionate that if one woman, or man, goes and just checks their skin or their breast… if there’s anything different, let the specialist tells you that – which is what they did to me.”

The scratchcard winner also wants to help in other ways. “There's lots of little things that I think will help - small things like... breast cancer gowns.”
