How Playing the National Lottery Helps Communities

When National Lottery tickets are purchased, there’s always the hope that a big win is just around the corner. However, what is guaranteed is that huge amounts of money will be raised for local charities and community groups.

Andrew Stephenson is the member of parliament (MP) for the Pendle constituency in Lancashire, England. He has thanked National Lottery players for playing their part in raising much needed funds. It’s estimated that £36 million is raised each week for good causes around the UK.

His comments came after Home-Start East Lancashire received a total of £478,040 in National Lottery funding. This is greatly needed by the group after the economic and social challenges created by the ongoing pandemic.

Helping the Recovery

The group is based in Burnley and helps local families in several ways. Mr Stephenson is delighted with the news of the grant. He’s now calling for more local groups to make an application for National Lottery funding. The MP believes that doing so will help them as they try to recover from the affects of the pandemic.

Speaking about the grant made to Home-Start East Lancashire, he said it was “heartening” to see them receive such funding. “The National Lottery is supported so many groups across the country like Home-Start doing inspirational work and providing support to local people and communities through what have been some extremely difficult times.”

Incredibly Proud

Nearly £200 million has been awarded by the National Lottery Community Fund this year. Their England Director is Elly De Decker. She is “incredibly proud” at the fund distributing such a large amount this year. The funding is “having a significant impact on people’s lives across the country, helping to build back stronger communities.”

2020 was a difficult year for all of us. The National Lottery Community Fund awarded £588.2 million to communities across the UK. 83% of the grants made were for under £10,000. A small figure but vital funding for grassroot groups and small charities. They all do so much to help their local communities but might not be able to do so without National Lottery funding.
