Lottery News From Around the World

It’s been another exciting week in the lottery world. Here’s a look at some of the best recent news stories from Europe and Canada.

Just in time

A lottery winner from Co Dublin in Ireland, nearly missed out on his €250,000 Lotto Plus 2 win. He ended up claiming his win from 19 November 2022 just a week before it was due to expire.

He’d been allowing his win to sink in and kept his ticket in his bedside drawer. When asked how he’ll spend his €250,000, he replied: “I plan to spend every penny and enjoy it, but I’m not telling you how!”.

Much needed win

Sometimes a lottery win comes along just when you need it the most. Nick and Rhian from Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England, can tell you that. They won a £30,000 Postcode Lottery prize and £5,000 to spend on a holiday in the Street Prize draw held on February 11.

Nick was made redundant last year after being in his job for 20 years which has hit their finances. His wife added: “Things like this don’t happen to us. The biggest win we’ve won before was probably the bingo and that was only 50 quid.”

Plans for their winnings include Rhian taking her mother to London for a night at the Ritz Hotel. Their holiday might be in Hawaii or a trip around the USA. Nick wants a jet wash and a new washing machine. He added: “Rhian can also get a new handbag so that shuts her up.”

Helping others

Jolee Armstrong from Calgary in Canada won a $5 million prize in the January 11 Lotto 6/49 draw but it took a week for her to find out she’d won.

The lucky lottery winner says she’s “very grateful” for  her win, but added: “It’s not lost on us how fortunate we are.”  Some of the windfall will be given to their family members and their favourite charities. Also planned is using the lottery win to have “some fun in retirement.”
