Back to news

Just days before Christmas, some ticket-holders in Spain are celebrating wins of €400,000 in the El Gordo de Navidad draw. The winning number in the El Gordo de Navidad draw that was held on December 22 was 71198. That lucky five-digit figure was as is the tradition in Spain, sung by two children from San Idelfonso school in Madrid at 11.56pm and corresponded to the top €4m prize. That winning number has bought delight to players across Spain. Each person with a winning ticket will share the number with nine other people - meaning they each get a 10 per cent share worth €400,000.Winning areas include Madrid’s famous Doña Manolita lottery shop and the Bruixa D'Or lottery organization. History was made when tickets for the El Gordo de Navidad draw were sold in the city of Jaca in Huesca. A gas station in the south of Tenerife also confirmed as selling the winning number. Players had been dreaming of El Gordo de Navidad success and it paid off for those who purchased winning tickets in Vilaba in northwest Spain and Malaga in southern Spain. The second prize number this year was 51244 (€1,250,000) while the third prize number was 06914 (€500,000). Hopefully some of the winners will see their lives changed forever. That’s what happened to Ngagne Pouye, after his €400,000 El Gordo de Navidad win. Last year it was players in the Acacias neighbourhood of Madrid who won €400,000 playing the El Gordo de Navidad draw.In all, the El Gordo de Navidad lottery had prize money of €2.38 billion spread across 15,304 prizes. That includes 1,794 prizes of €1,000 each (the so-called pedrea) as a consolation prize for those not lucky enough to win the jackpot. It’s believed that about 70 percent of Spaniards between the ages of 18 and 75 play the El Gordo de Navidad draw with players queueing up in long lines to get hold of their tickets. That was shown in the TV advertisement for the El Gordo de Navidad draw. Now players will be turning their attention to the El Niño draw that takes place in Spain on 6 January 2018. That’s known as the day of the Three Kings in Spain which Spaniards celebrate almost as much, if not more, than Christmas itself.
