Shopkeeper Jailed for Trying to Falsely Claim £130,000 EuroMillions Win

A shopkeeper from Leeds in England has been jailed for 28 months. Narendra Gill told a deaf customer that their EuroMillions ticket was a loser. It had in fact won £130,000 and she then tried to claim the winnings for herself.

Gill, 52, who lives in York, was found guilty of theft and fraud over the incident. Ms Gill was given her 28-month sentence by Recorder Dafydd Enoch QC. He said: “People who work in these places need to hear the message that you cannot abuse your position when it comes to dealing with millions of pounds. Trust is important.”

81-year-old Frank Gowland went to her shop to check his EuroMillions ticket. His luck had been in and he’d won £130,000. However, the shopkeeper told him that the ticket hadn’t won anything at all.

Suspicious

15 minutes later, Ms Gill then phoned Camelot telling them of her ‘win.’ Lottery organisers Camelot became suspicious when hearing her serving customers in the background. Gill claimed that she was an employee at the shop and claimed the EuroMillions ticket had been given to her by a customer.

Camelot then contacted the police and asked them to check the CCTV footage at the White Rose Shopping Centre where the shop is situated. By this they were able to identify Mr Gowland as the person who actually owned the winning EuroMillions ticket.

No idea of win

Only when the retired delivery man was contacted by the police about the theft of the EuroMillions ticket, did he know anything was wrong. Speaking after the conclusion of the case, he said: “The whole thing has been quite a shock.” He added that until being called by the police he had no idea of his EuroMillions win.

The real EuroMillions winner said that the shopkeeper had been “lying through her teeth” about the ticket.” “It’s unbelievable really,” he continued. “I might never have known.”

He has now received his EuroMillions winnings and says the windfall has “certainly helped to make life a bit more comfortable.”
