Water and a Seat for $5 million Lottery Winner

David McDonald from Belle River in Ontario, Canada, wanted one of his favourite cigars. He also bought a lottery ticket and it won him $5 million.

Buying a ticket wasn’t out of character as David has been playing lottery games since he was legally able to do so. It was a scratchcard that turned him into a millionaire rather than his usual Lotto 6/49 and Lottario purchases.

Every now and then though, a scratchcard is bought “because of the win potential.” He probably didn’t expect to win $5 million though.  

When discovering his win, the lucky lottery player admits to feeling “a little overwhelmed.”  He started shaking and had to check his ticket twice before believing he had won. Ontario is a lucky place to play the lottery. Last year saw  Anna Pelka win a $20 million Lotto Max jackpot.

Completely shocked

So shocked was he that the store clerk had to offer him a seat and a glass of water. “My legs felt like jelly,” he recalled. “I was completely shocked, and my heart was racing. I just kept thinking to myself, ‘This can’t be true!’” added the lottery winner.

Retirement

It was though but he decided to wait until returning home to tell his wife their great news. After the initial shock, she replied: “Does this mean I can retire now?’” to which her husband replied that she could.

A couple from Ontario won a $55 million Lotto Max jackpot  and instantly retired.

His own retirement can wait a while. However, McDonald plans to “take a bit of a step back from work.” That will allow him to spend more time with his family. He also wants to go on trips to England, Scotland and Ireland.

He also wants to be able to give financial help to both his mother and children. Speaking about his win, the delighted player said: “Knowing I walked into the store to buy a cigar and left with $5 million — it blows my mind.  Even now, seeing my name on the cheque, it’s hard to believe.”
