$150,000 Powerball Winner Donates All Her Winnings to Charity

Carrie Edwards from Virginia, USA, won $150,000 with her very first Powerball ticket. The generous grandmother then announced all of her winnings from the September 8 draw will be given to charity.

Divine windfall

Recently a player won a $2 million Mega Millions prize  with their first purchase of 2025. This lucky Powerball winner said: “As soon as that divine windfall happened and came down upon my shoulders. I knew exactly what I needed to do with it and I knew I needed to give it all away.”

Her $150,000 win will be divided evenly between the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Shalom Farms and the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, each receiving $36,000 after taxes.  Some Powerball winners set up a foundation after their big win.

Those are three charities that Carrie is “very passionate” about. To her and she has previously donated to them.

Personal reason

There is a personal reason for her decision to donate money to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration. The charity supports education, research and family resources for people affected by early-onset dementia. Sadly, that was the cause of her husband’s death.

Carrie hopes that her donation will “shine a light on the families who are fighting this disease and on the researchers working towards a cure.”

Also receiving assistance from the Powerball winner is Shalom Farms. They are a nonprofit farm and food justice organisation in Virginia. Each year sees them growing and distributing over 400,000 savings of Certified Naturally Grown produce.

A Shalom Farms representative, Anna Ibrahim, said the donation will mean “more fresh fruits and vegetables in more shoppers’ bags across the city.”

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provide emergency assistance and financial and educational help to active-duty service members, veterans and their families. It’s an organisation Edwards is fully aware of as she grew up in a Navy family.

The organisation says that the funds received strengthen their “mission of standing beside sailors, Marines, and their loved ones during times of financial stress.”

Tomorrow’s Powerball draw has a $127 million jackpot.
