First Purchase of 2025 Produces $2 million Mega Millions Win

Winning a $2 million Mega Millions prize proved to be an overwhelming experience for Deborah Sexton from North Carolina, USA and it was her first ticket purchase of 2025.

The Davidson resident simply couldn’t believe that her ticket had made her a millionaire in the August 22 draw.  “I was like, ‘How can this be happening to me?” recalled the Mega Millions winner.

The delighted player added: "It was overwhelming. I was just like, ‘This can’t be.’” Her ticket was the most successful in that Mega Millions draw. It was the only one able to match the five main balls: 18-30-44-48-50.

Just imagine how shocked she’d  have been if matching the Mega Ball 12.  If that had been the case, she’d have won the $234 million jackpot but it was not to be.

Amazingly, it’s a win that very nearly didn’t happen. In fact, at one stage the lucky player was going to just enter the Powerball draw due to take place on August 23. However, it was her husband who suggested that a Mega Millions purchase should also be made.  No wonder his wife joked: “I have to give him some credit.”

First tickets this year

Often it’s regular lottery players who win big prizes. Not this time though. Deborah said that the couple were making their first purchases of the year. They had seen that the Powerball jackpot was $700 million so decided to try their luck.

That purchase wasn’t successful and it wasn’t until  earlier this month  that a $1.78 bn Powerball jackpot was won.

After payment of federal and state tax, Deborah received a total of $1,435,001. Plans for her Mega Millions winnings include taking a trip to Maine to see her family.

The jackpot has continued to grow. Not since June 27 has the top prize been won. On that occasion, it was  a ticket sold in Virginia, USA that won the $348 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The top prize has been won just four times this year. Tonight’s jackpot is $400 million and that’s the largest seen in 2025.
