$245.6M WINNING POWERBALL TICKET KEPT ON KITCHEN TABLE FOR A WEEK
Nandlall Mangal from Staten Island in New York, USA, has been revealed as the winner of the $245.6m Powerball jackpot won on August 11 but his winning ticket lay on his kitchen table for a week before being checked.
Speaking about his Powerball jackpot win, Mangal said “I’m sure that my life is gonna change a lot.” He joked that his win is a “lot of money” and he’ll probably pass out when he gets to see his winnings.
His winning Powerball ticket was purchased from the Stop & Shop supermarket on Staten Island while he was picking up groceries. Dale Farrand from New York only went to a store to get some food for his dog and also bought a $10m winning Cash Spectacular scratchcard.
His $245.6m winning Powerball ticket spent a week on his kitchen table as he was out of town on holiday in Ocean City. James Smith from Pennsylvania, USA, won a $15,000 Keno prize while on his way to the same holiday destination. He should have taken the ticket with him on his holiday, which is what Irishman Rory McParland did with a £1m winning EuroMillions ticket.
He then heard no one had claimed the Powerball jackpot and decided to finally check his ticket. He wasn’t confident of a win though saying: “Who’s going to think they won the Lotto?” The lucky winner only plays the Powerball draw when the jackpot is over $100m.
The Powerball winner has accepted his Powerball win as a one-off payment of $99,321,975 after withholdings and has assigned it to a trust named ‘Sea & Sand.’ He hasn’t got many plans on how to spend his Powerball winnings but says he’s always wanted to go to Hawaii and that dream can now come true.
The 42-year-old is a Guyanese immigrant and works as a carpenter. Recently we told you about retired Canadian carpenter Leonardo Piazza who won $50,000 on a Quest for the Gold Crossword scratchcard.
The Powerball winner currently lives in a humble three-bedroomed ranch home in New Dorp. He hasn’t quit his job yet, just like the $543m Mega Millions jackpot winning syndicate of bank workers in California, USA. Mangal says he loves working and hasn’t told his co-workers about his big win. Often big lottery winners find long-lost relatives coming out of the woodwork. This Powerball winner joked: “If I didn’t know them two weeks ago, I don’t know them today.”
