Every year we have the task of sorting out the Christmas decorations. Mathieu Labrie from Montreal in Canada did just that and found an old lottery ticket. He checked it to see if it had won anything and was shocked to discover it’d won $50,000.

The 30-year-old had bought the ticket just eight days into the New Year but never checked it until his November 29 discovery.

So shocked was he that Mathieu asked his neighbours to double-check it. They confirmed his big win and now the lottery winner plans to renovate his family home and give his wife and children a fantastic Christmas.

The Christmas present that kept giving

Sheila Colter works as a supervisor at Med Centre in Kentucky, USA  and was going to buy her coworkers some presents for their Christmas party. When the presents failed to turn up, she decided to buy them some lottery tickets instead.

It was a pleasant seasonal gesture and when the tickets started producing wins, they went out and bought more. The wins kept on coming and they hit the big time with a $50,000 win.

21 lucky players will share the pre-Christmas windfall. The generous supervisor is happy too as her share will be used to finish off her Christmas shopping.  An English syndicate recently won a £1m EuroMillions prize.

Another worker, Winnie Beckman, plans to use her share to help pay for her mother’s medical bills. “This will help a lot. And I will never forget this,” she said.

There’s still time to win a big lottery jackpot in time for Christmas. On Saturday December 23, there’s a $620 million Powerball top prize.
