Secretive Bookmaker Wins $55m Lotto Max jackpot

Keeping a secret is never that easy is it? William Scott Gurney from British Columbia in Canada, had a massive secret he was keeping to himself, a $55 million Lotto Max jackpot in the February 28 draw.

This time of the year is a busy one for Gurney as he’s a self-employed bookkeeper. When his clients were getting help with their tax returns, he felt awkward when they said “See you next year!”  That’s because he hadn’t told them that he was a multi-millionaire and would soon be quitting.

Harder and harder

“It was getting harder and harder to keep it a secret,” said the Lotto Max winner. He recalled the day when he bought his $55 million winning ticket.  He’d just gone to a local supermarket to get some groceries. In addition he spent $20 on lottery tickets, the best purchase he’ll ever make.

The following morning, he heard that someone had won the $55 million Lotto Max jackpot. He quickly looked at his app to check his ticket and discovered his great fortune.

Shocked at what he’d seen, he asked a shop assistant to double check. That didn’t help a great deal because she initially thought the win was only $55,000 but then realised it was actually $55 million.

In shock at his big win there wasn’t a great deal of work carried out that day. “ I kinda just stared at the ticket and did a little bit of daydreaming,” said the surprised Lotto Max winner.

When he did finally get around to telling his clients (many of whom are also friends), they were delighted to hear the news. That’s even though they will have to find someone else to do their accounts.

Just doesn’t seem real

However, he does want to help his family and a home on Vancouver Island will be purchased. It’ll be one with a dock as he loves crabbing. A vacation home is also planned with lots of travelling on its way.  “It’s life-altering,” said the lucky player. “It just doesn’t seem real.”
