Terry and Caroline Gillings will ensure their four daughters all have secure futures after a £1 million UK Lotto win.

The couple from Stanley in Durham, England won their prize in the March 26 UK Lotto draw but have only just received their winner’s cheque.

It’s been an emotional time for them because shortly after their win, Terry’s 85-year-old father sadly passed away.

Immediate decision

Terry, 61, said that the couple “decided pretty much straight away” that their daughters would “benefit from our luck.”

Their father recalled the moment he called them with the news their mortgages were going to be paid off. “It generated quite a bit of screaming and joy,” he said. Being able to help them is “every parent's dream,” added the proud parent.

Terry was able to tell his father the good news. Then sadly, two days later his father died. “I like to think knowing Caroline and I, and the girls, were all set up for the future meant he slipped away more peacefully,” said his bereaved son.

Still working

Even though he has won £1 million, the lottery winner still went to work the following Monday and has no intention of retiring. He’s been working as a builder since leaving school. “I can’t really imagine stopping now,” said the UK Lotto winner..

Recently an Australian couple  won a $30 million Australian Powerball jackpot but said they’d carry on working.

He might stop taking new clients though for a personal project. With a friend he bought some land a few years ago. The plan was to build some houses there but couldn’t afford to do so. That’s all changed now.

It’s the latest big win in Durham after  Toni Henderson won a £1 million UK Lotto prize.

The couple also plan on making a donation to the Breast Cancer Awareness charity. That’s something which has greatly affected their family.

Perhaps they’ll enter Friday’s EuroMillions draw. That has a £208 million (€250 million) jackpot after another rollover on Tuesday.
