Ticket Sold in Oregon Scoops $1.326bn Powerball Jackpot

Saturday April 6 finally saw the Powerball jackpot won. A ticket sold in Oregon, USA, won the $1.326 billion top prize. It’s the fourth largest win in the history of the lottery.

Such was the demand for tickets it led to Saturday’s Powerball draw being delayed. Every ticket sold has to be checked and verified against two different computer systems. Until that has happened the draw cannot take place.

After a delay of over three hours the draw finally took place. The numbers drawn were: 22-27-44-52-69 and the Powerball 9.

Big decision

Just one ticket was able to match those numbers. Now the winner(s) have a major decision to make. They can accept their winnings as a one-off lump payment of $621 million (before tax) if they wish. Alternatively, the $1.326 million can be received over 30 years, again subject to taxation.

There were seven tickets that matched the five main balls in the Powerball draw. They each win their owners $1 million. The magnificent seven were sold in Massachusetts, Michigan, Wyoming, Florida, Delaware, Iowa and Arizona.

This is the first time the Powerball jackpot has been won since January 1. On that occasion, a ticket sold in Michigan, USA,  won $842.4 million on the Powerball. There had been 40 consecutive rollovers before this latest jackpot win.

It’s by far the largest ever Powerball win in Oregon. The previous highest was a $340 million jackpot won 19 years ago.

Accidental winner

You need a huge slice of luck to win a massive Powerball jackpot. Perhaps you might even end up winning one by mistake. That’s what happened to Miriam Long from Christiansburg in Virginia, USA, last month.

Her intention had been to buy a ticket for the Mega Millions draw. However, she pressed the wrong button and got one for the March 18 Powerball draw instead. It’s a mistake she’ll never regret as her ticket won $1 million.

Not surprisingly she called it “the best mistake of my life.”  Tonight’s Powerball jackpot is $20 million.
