Tickets Sold in Missouri and Texas Share $1.787bn Powerball Jackpot
What an incredible weekend it was for lottery players on both sides of the Atlantic. Not only was a €65 million EuroMillions jackpot won but then two tickets shared a $1.787 billion Powerball top prize.
Spanish success
On Friday, the EuroMillons jackpot was won by a ticket sold in Spain. It’s the eighth time the top prize has been won this year. Spain last won a EuroMillions jackpot in December 2024.
Powerball jackpot shared
Just 24 hours later, the Powerball jackpot was finally won. Tickets sold in Missouri and Texas were able to match 11-23-44-61-62 and the Powerball 17 to share the amazing $1.787 billion top prize.
It was the second-largest jackpot in the history of the Powerball lottery. The only larger win is the $2.04 billion Powe rball prize won by Edwin Castro in 2022.
It’s the 32nd time that a ticket sold in Missouri has won a Powerball jackpot but only the third occasion for Texas.
No one has so far come forward to claim their winnings. We do know the Texan ticket was sold at Big’s 103 gas station in Fredericksburg. Last year saw a Texan ticket win a $810m Mega Millions prize.
The winnings can be claimed in full as an annuity. This sees one payment received and then 29 annual payments. Alternatively, the share of the jackpot can be received as a one-off payment of 410.3 million.
In Texas, no state tax is paid on lottery winnings but federal taxes will need to be paid. Missouri has a state tax of 4.7% as well as the federal taxes due.
It’s possible that we might never get to know who the lucky players are. Both states allow winners of large lottery prizes to retain their anonymity.
It might be a while until we find out when the jackpot winnings have been claimed. The recommendation for winners is to get financial advice and appoint a legal team before coming forward. It may be that a trust is founded to claim the prize.
Tonight’s Powerball draw has a $20m jackpot.
