$5,000 MEGA MILLIONS WIN TURNS OUT TO BE $2M

It’s taken six years of trying but finally a syndicate of workers from Fairfield in Connecticut, USA, have had a big win. They won $2m in the August 24 Mega Millions draw.

The Mega Millions winning syndicate was set up in 2012 by Karen Cross. She set up a “Lottery Club’ at her place of work at Al Filippone Associates at William Raveis Real Estate in Fairfield It was early in the morning after the August 24 Mega Millions draw that she received a text message telling her that there had been a second-tier winning ticket sold in Fairfield. Later she discovered that the winning Mega Millions ticket had been sold at the Wheels Convenience Store where she had purchased their ticket.

The Mega Millions syndicate leader quickly checked their ticket and was shocked to discover they had matched the five main balls in the draw. The numbers drawn out were: 01-06-13-48-49 and the Mega Ball 08. If their ticket had matched the Mega Ball they would have won the $118m Mega Millions jackpot.

At first though, Karen didn’t know how much their Mega Millions ticket had won. “I thought it was $5,000 at first, but we were optimistic,” she said. Chi Vinh La from Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada won a $1m Lotto Max prize but initially thought he’d only won $100,000.

Eager to find out how much they’d won the syndicate leader headed back to the Wheels Convenience Store with some other syndicate members and when the scanner told them the real value of the Mega Millions ticket, they all went quiet and “got goosebumps.” It as only when they got back to the car that the screaming began. A couple who recently landed a $6.3m New Zealand Powerball jackpot said they couldn’t stop giggling when finding out they were winners. Canadian Barry Combden was “shocked” when discovering he’d won $10m playing the Lotto Max draw.

The Lottery Club has 31 members and each of the Mega Millions winners will receive $64,516.63 before taxes. When the Mega Millions syndicate leader was handed the super-sized “Winner” cheque, she joked: “I always wanted one of these.”

Friday’s Mega Millions draw has a $227m jackpot. Perhaps the Lottery Club might win again, after all a man from Colorado, USA, had three big lottery wins in the space of 17 months. In Ireland, the ‘Two Little Ducks’ syndicate won two big EuroMillions wins in the same week.
