A man from Winnipeg in western Canada has won a total of C$3.5 million ($2.7m) in lottery prizes after winning on two different scratchcards in five months.

Melhig Melhig, a man with a double name and a double lottery win, emigrated from Africa with his family to live in Winnipeg, Manitoba and won his first $1.16 million on a lottery game in April, according to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. He used those winnings to move his family from a small apartment into a new home big enough for all of them. His second win came this August, when he bought a ‘Scratch ‘n’ Win’ lottery ticket from a Giant Tiger store, and that was worth $1.54 million. A couple from Toronto recently won big on a scratchcard after they decided to change their lottery purchasing routine.

The second lot of sratchcard winnings are going to help Mr Melhig to go back to school, he told WCLC officials. “I’m young,” he said. “You always need to think about how to grow.” Recently a group of four friends from Winnipeg shared a huge $3.5 million Lotto 649 jackpot, and a couple from nearbyAlberta were planning to do their post-win growing in Hawaii after winning $100,000 on the Lotto Max.

The scratchcard winner said that his family were already feeling lucky having been able to move into a house, “Everything is new,” he said. “We have a nice yard, good schools. We love it.” Now, he has even more opportunities, and he can’t wait to get started. A man from Sydney was recently announced as Australia’s luckiest man after winning a Lotto jackpot twice within seven days.

“I want to improve my English and communication,” he said of his ambitions at school. “And I want to learn something useful, like carpentry.” The family man said that he also wants to open his own business and is considering buying a petrol station or a car wash.

It is not clear how long the 28-year-old has been in Canada for, but his residency has certainly gotten off to a good start. The lucky lottery winner said that he is “amazed and happy” with his scratchcard fortune. A Montana woman felt the same after she won big on two different lottery scratchcards in the space of one day.
