Cat-Loving South Australian Wins $4.8m Set for Life Prize

A man from Seaford Rise in South Australia has won a $4.8 million Set for Life prize. It’s great news for him and not bad for his beloved cat either.

The lucky player won his prize in the Set for Life draw held on June 16. He will receive $20,000 a month for the next 20 years. That makes it a total of $4.8 million coming his way over the next couple of decades.

Unlike the recent still unclaimed $100 million Australian Powerball winner, his ticket was registered. That meant the lottery company could get on the phone and tell him his amazing news.

The Set for Life winner had in fact already discovered his great slice of luck. He had been on the phone to his mother (who also buys tickets) when deciding to see if they’d won anything in the latest draw.

His mother was unsuccessful but it was a different story when her son checked his as he recalled. “It was so surreal. I felt like I was having a heart attack.”

Sleepless night

Not sure whether he was seeing things, the Set for Life winner says he must have checked the ticket “about 1,000 times.”  A sleepless night followed: “I wanted to sleep but my brain just kept saying ‘no”’ joked the shocked player. “I couldn’t stop thinking it’s not real,” he added

When chatting with the lottery company, he had a calming drink of chai tea rather than champagne.

Happy tears

Speaking about his Set for Life win, he described it as “completely life changing” as “happy tears” began to flow. It’s the latest win for a South Australian player with  a female player also recently winning $4.8 million on the Set for Life.

Plans for his winnings include helping his mother and sister. “Family is everything to me,” said the generous winner. Also precious to him is his “beautiful cat.” His feline friend already gets “the princess treatment” but will be “even more spoiled” now. An English couple said they had to thank their cat for a £1 million lottery win.
