Ham and Cheese Sandwich for €250 million EuroMillions Winner

The Irish family syndicate that  won a record-equalling €250m (£216m) EuroMillions jackpot  on June 17 have been speaking about their amazing slice of luck.

The anonymous winners say they will not let their EuroMillions success “change us.” That’s illustrated perfectly by one lucky winner saying he’ll continue to have a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch each day.

There had been plenty of gossip about  who had bought the winning EuroMillions ticket from Clifford’s Centra in Cork, Ireland.

The person who had made the purchase said that they regularly play the EuroMillions draw. However, they hadn’t entered the two previous draws but then saw in the shop window how large the jackpot was. “I picked one up and honestly, didn’t think much of it.” said the buyer.

One of the winners recalled how they discovered their EuroMillions win. They didn’t see the draw live but saw on the television that an Irish ticket had won the jackpot. A message was then received from the National Lottery telling them they’d “won big.”

He wasn’t used to seeing such a message and says he must have checked it four more times. Then he ran upstairs to wake his wife up. The couple sat on the edge of their bed as they checked the EuroMillions results.

“Oh my god”

When realising the jackpot had been won, all they could say was ‘oh my god.’  “I reckon we said it about 50 times,” added the shocked player.

A sleepless night followed and the next morning they phoned the National Lottery to confirm their win. The few minutes that took were described by the lucky player as “the longest of my life.”

The winning EuroMilions ticket was kept hidden in their bedroom inside an A4 sheet and placed under a pile of folded laundry.

Holiday homes

The family will continue to live in Ireland but are going to buy “holiday homes somewhere in the sun.” They will also use some of their winnings to buy houses for their children.

Tomorrow’s EuroMillions draw has a €111 million (£96 million) jackpot.
