27 years ago bus driver Peter Lavery from Belfast in Northern Ireland won a £10.2 million National Lottery jackpot. He’s recently been talking about how the win has changed his life.

It wasn’t Peter (now aged 61) who discovered his National Lottery jackpot win. A friend knew his numbers, saw the draw and realised his pal had won the jackpot. He phoned Peter with the fantastic news but he thought it was a joke. Not until the following morning did he check the results and found out he was a millionaire.

Rather than celebrate he went to work and did a five-hour shift earning himself another £50. He did however ask to take Monday off so he could claim his £10.2 million winnings. Not that he told anyone that. He just put down “personal, one day only.’ The word did get round about his National Lottery success and two days later his bus driving days were over.

Upheaval

The National Lottery winner then booked a holiday in the Caribbean. “It was the biggest upheaval of my whole life. Sunday morning I’m driving a bus round Belfast, then by Wednesday I was in St Lucia in a top resort,” he joked.

He didn’t go on holiday on his own. 10 people went with him to St Lucia and 22 on a trip to New York. His two sisters and younger brother also enjoyed a trip to New York, travelling there on Concorde.

New homes and cars

Peter was often helping others with his National Lottery winnings. While he bought a £300,000 home, he also bought his family home for his family. Half a million pounds was spent on new cars in his first two years as a multi-millionaire. His love of cars has since diminished and he’s sold them all bar his Mercedes.

The holidays continue though to this day. He takes his wife Vikki on trips three times a year. This includes cruises and shopping trips to Miami. It certainly beats driving a bus for a living.
