Problems and Fines Mount Up for Norsk Tipping
The fines continue to mount up for Norwegian lottery company Norsk Tipping. They are now faced with having to settle fines totalling over £8 million.
Earlier this year the company was fined after sending out inaccurate information to their customers. Hugely inflated Eurojackpot winnings were announced due to a mathematical error.
Norsk Tipping then asked Norwegian accounting firm PwC to review their lottery products, particularly Lotto, Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto. In 2022 a Mega Millions draw saw a wrong number be announced.
The audit found that Norsk Tipping had put too much focus on innovation and new developments. This was “at the expense of quality and control.” The audit has also criticised Norsk Tipping’s leadership.
“Too many vulnerabilities”
Reacting to the report, Norsk Tipping acting CEO Vegar Strand said the company takes the findings “very seriously” and again apologised to their customers. The acting CEO added that the report shows they “have had too many vulnerabilities” and “every stone will be turned” to correct the problems.
The company has already taken action during the past seven months as they attempt to improve the way their business is run. Strategy, analysis and business development methods have also been reviewed.
“Need to improve”
Board member Sylvia Brustad says the report has shown them “where we need to improve” and she is “confident” that Norsk Tipping “has learned from its mistakes” Her hope is that the improvements they are making “will lead to a new and stronger Norsk Tipping in the future.”
Other problems have been identified this year. The Norwegian gambling regulator found that players who were in gaming clubs and cooperatives had more chance of winning with Norsk Tipping than they should have.
There have also been problems with self-excluded players being unable to block themselves from their Norsk Tipping accounts.
Another fine is possible due to the company incorrectly drawing 52 players as winners during an April super draw. Norsk Tipping have blamed that incident on a technical error in their system but the Norwegian gambling regulator believe they should be sanctioned.
