Wrong EuroJackpot Winning Totals Given to Norwegian Players

Imagine being mistakenly told you’ve won a huge lottery prize. That is what happened to a large number of Norwegian players in the last EuroJackpot draw.

“My responsibility”

The mistake was made by the Norsk Tipping lottery company. A day after the error was realised, their CEO Tonje Sagstuen announced her resignation.  “Here, things have failed in several places, this is my responsibility,” she commented.

It is believed to be several thousand who received inaccurate information about how much they had won in the EuroJackpot draw.

Mathematical error

How could such a mistake be made? Well, it is all down to some simple mathematical errors. The amount that players win is given to Norsk Tipping in euros. They then convert the amounts into Norwegian kroner.

However, rather than dividing the euros total by 100, it was multiplied. This led to “excessively high” and very inaccurate amounts being distributed to lucky players.  In 2022 a wrong number was given out in a Mega Millions draw.

It wasn’t until the evening after the EuroJackpot  draw that the correct winning amounts were confirmed. Norsk Tipping have said that no incorrect pay-outs were made to players.  A recent EuroMillions winner thought their €255,000 was only €5,000.

Sagstuen said that she was “terribly sorry that we have disappointed so many.” She added that the criticism levelled at them was “justified” as it was a “breach of trust.”

One woman was told she’d won 1.2 million kroner (£87,000) but that was totally wrong.
stand that it is a small consolation," she said.

The now former CEO said that people had contacted her explaining how they planned to spend their winnings.’ This included buying an apartment, booking holidays and making house renovations.

The former CEO said she was confident in the “improvement processes” that have now been introduced.

It’s the latest in a series of problems for the lottery company. Other serious errors have also been uncovered recently with “a number of technical problems in the past year".

Friday’s EuroJackpot draw has a €42 million top prize.
